Early thinking on mapping and maps

A recent private-public consultation convened by the National Academy of Sciences suggested that an improved ability to understand the status of electric power and transporation links in a crisis could substantially enhance supply chain resilience.  It was noted that many participants in the consultation -- both private and public -- have had a considerable challenge finding and displaying this information in a way that supports crisis decision-making.

Following is an early effort to address this issue.

Overview of Los Angeles Grocery Market (Static)

Below is a preliminary mapping of the distribution nodes for groceries serving the City of Los Angeles. A few nodes for non-grocery food and for nodes that do not serve the City of Los Angeles are also displayed.  Please click on the link immediately below to access an interactive version of this supply chain map, this should open in a new window.

PLEASE NOTE: The mapping of the Los Angeles grocery supply chain is currently in-process. The current map probably includes errors and may not display nodes of equal importance.  Research and validation is expected to continue through September.

Overview of the Los Angeles Transportation Network (Near-Realtime)

Below is a map showing the near-realtime status of the surface transportation system in the Los Angeles metropolitan region. This continually updated map is provided by the Los Angeles County Service Authority for Freeway Emergencies (LA SAFE).

Overview of the Los Angeles Electrical Grid (Near-Realtime)

Below is a map showing the near-realtime status of electrical power in the Los Angeles metropolitan region. Prior to the recent National Academy of Sciences consultation, Southern California Edison had not facilitated third-party display of such information.  We very much appreciate SCE's cooperation in developing this display capability to inform next steps in the consultation.
